About this newsletter

The ACP Advocate is an e-newsletter, edited by the College's Washington, DC governmental affairs division, created to provide you, our members, with succinct news about public policy issues affecting internal medicine and patient care. To learn more about ACP's Advocacy and to access the ACP Advocate archives, go to www.acponline.org/advocacy.

Welcome to The ACP Advocate.

In this week’s issue we update you on the comprehensive health care reform legislation that is continuing to move through the Senate Finance Committee. We also detail for you, two new reports. The first is new Census data about health insurance. The data, collected in the Annual Social and Economic Supplement conducted earlier this year, showed a rising number of uninsured and more people being covered by government programs. The second report, issued by HHS, was released to make the case that health care reform will benefit seniors.

For more coverage of health care reform take a look at my blog, The ACP Advocate Blog by Bob Doherty. I encourage you to post your own comments and become part of the discussion taking place among members like you.

Also, if you’re interested in more information about ACP’s priorities for health care reform I encourage you to check out the Advocacy section of ACP’s Web siteThere you’ll find a summary of our top priorities and a comparison of the major health bills currently being considered in Congress.

And, as always, please send your feedback and suggestions on this newsletter to: TheACPAdvocate@acponline.org.

Yours truly,

Bob Doherty

ACP President Appears at White House Event
ACP President Joseph Stubbs was among 100 physicians invited to appear with President Obama at an Oct. 5 White House event to show physician support for broad principles for improving the health care system. He was accompanied by Wayne J. Riley, MD, MACP, a member of ACP's Board of Regents. While the principles were consistent with ACP policies -- including: prohibiting exclusions for pre-existing conditions, reducing defensive medicine costs & replacing Medicare’s SGR formula -- their attendance did not constitute ACP endorsement of particular bills or partisan political activities.
